1858 - The first railroad comes to Oshkosh

In 1878 a steam-powered automobile built in Oshkosh won what is recognized
as the first recorded road race in the United States. Madison artist Emma
Glenz
sketched this scene from the race as part of a state highway commission program
to honor Wisconsin's centennial of statehood in 1948.

The Grand Opera House, The Scene of Many great Theatrical and Musical Attractions.
The first hospital started in Oshkosh by the Sisters of the
Sorrowful Mother was in this converted temporary building.

1897 - Electric street cars replaced the horse cars.

On February 22, 1922, the city endures the worst
sleet storm in its history. Electricity is out for a week.

Steve Wittman and a sampling of the trophies he garnered in a racing career
that spanned six decades.
An aircraft designer and Oshkosh airport manager for decades, Wittman was
instrumental in bringing
the Experimental Aircraft Association to Oshkosh.

The Edgar Sawyer house on Algoma Boulevard served as Senator Sawyer's home
when he was away from Washington. The senator's son Edgar demolished the house
in 1907 and built the building that serves as the Oshkosh Public Museum in
1908.
